A lightweight, transformable bed
Air is a floating, ethereal, sexy bed. The base for the bed is suspended on four almost invisible sheets of glass, which lend a sensation of amazing lightness to the design. Thanks to the complete transparency of the extra-clear tempered glass, the bed seems to float and it is like sleeping on a cloud.
Air is also a transformable bed, which draws on the concept behind the Air sofa: elements like backrests, shelves and drawers can be attached anywhere on the frame, and even bookshelving can be set up to run along the entire perimeter of the bed.
The four glass plates that support the HPL base can be used to adjust the height of the bed, depending on whether you attach them vertically or horizontally. So you can set up the bed at either of two different heights.
Air lets you enjoy the sensation of sleeping while floating in the air. You can also place a light under the base of the bed, to create a singular scenographic effect. With the lights turned off, this flying carpet inspires not only sleep, but also dreams.
The base for the Air bed draws on the design for the Air sofa, and so the bed is transformable. This means that you can accessorise the bed with backrests, drawers, open storage spaces, little shelves and bookcases, attaching them to the frame anywhere along the entire perimeter of the bed.
Since the bed is suspended on glass and has no corners, you sleep more comfortably, making the bed is simple and cleaning underneath the bed is easy, since it is raised above the floor.
The bed support is tempered glass, which is 6 times stronger than normal glass and also is more resistant to shocks, heat and abrupt temperature change.
The Air bed is part of the Air collection, which offers a new way of reading space, changing our perceptions of solid/void and light/heavy. It inverts the order of factors: extreme lightness for the supporting structures in transparent glass and solid physicality for the base.
The twenty Kamasutra figures hidden under the mattress on the base combine the fun of an aesthetic game and practicality, providing a built-in way to keep the mattress aired out.
